I’ll never dare to open any door
Whether in the day’s dawn or dusk of night
On a promise made so often before
That life can be fair with no cause for fright.
All windows are latched and every shade down
To barricade me from any who harm.
My senses assessing each shift of sound
And light and I’m ready to call alarm
On some intruding phantom of memory
Who slips into the fortress bearing my voice,
Whispering joys from some distant history
Of risking, succeeding and still having choice.
Ghosts of my past only serve to deceive.
I know what to think and what to believe.
