Just after waking I swiftly vacuum
Before the water boils to rinse the dishes
As I do prior to lifting the broom
To sweep the floors before the day’s wishes.
The same three wishes, six times recited.
Three hopes unattained and untempered by time
That my trio of fears be ignited
And from ritual ashes, my freedom chime.
This dream of liberty is cast from my house
As I step in and out of six pair of shoes
Then button, unbutton and button this blouse.
Thirty-four checks off five hundred to-dos.
Those knowing me best say I’m hard to endure.
I nod twice then repeat to keep us secure.
